A lower-impact commute starts with miles avoided and shared, then with how efficiently the remaining miles are driven. You do not need to replace a working car before improving the trip you already make.

Reduce or combine trips

Combine errands, use remote-work days when available, and choose routes that avoid repeated cold starts and severe congestion. Carpooling and transit reduce the number of vehicles carrying the same group of travelers.

Walking or cycling can replace short trips where routes and conditions are safe. Even partial changes—one shared commute or combined errand day—reduce fuel use without changing every routine.

Drive for efficiency and safety

EPA guidance emphasizes avoiding aggressive acceleration and braking, reducing unnecessary idling, and maintaining appropriate speeds. Anticipating traffic also makes the ride calmer and gives more room for safe decisions.

Remove unnecessary cargo and exterior racks when they are not in use. Added weight and aerodynamic drag can reduce efficiency, especially at highway speeds.

Maintain the vehicle

Keep tires at the pressure specified by the vehicle manufacturer, not the maximum printed on the tire sidewall. Follow the maintenance schedule and address warning lights or changes in performance.

Use the fuel grade and motor oil specification in the owner’s manual. Maintenance supports efficiency, reliability, and emissions performance; it does not turn a poorly chosen commute into an efficient one.

  • Check tire pressure when tires are cold
  • Replace filters and fluids on the specified schedule
  • Repair emissions-system faults promptly

If you are changing vehicles

Use the EPA fuel-economy label to compare vehicles for the driving you actually do. For an EV or plug-in hybrid, include charging access and your normal route—not only the advertised range.

A smaller or more efficient vehicle can reduce operating energy, but the complete purchase, insurance, and financing budget still matters.
